Scarlett & The Pixels - Sea of LCD - Starlett Records

added: 19 Dec 2011 // release date: 19 Dec 2011 // label: Starlett Records
reviewer: Ben Hillman

Scarlett & The Pixels - Sea of LCD - Email this album review Printable version 'Sea Of LCD' is the debut offering from new forward-thinking techno pop act Scarlett & The Pixels. The London-based solo act's opening statement is a bold one that reveals not only a deep understanding of the constructs and sonics of underground dance music but also a love for the evocative melodies and lyricism of classic pop music. The track in question is a delicate homage to the early 80s synthpop of Depeche Mode and New Order. This is analogue soul with a dark heart. ??Daniel Avery AKA Stopmakingme, has carved himself an impressive reputation as a DJ, producer and in-demand remixer. With a residency at internationally renowned club Fabric, releases on Bang Gang 12s, RemuteD and Kill Em All and remixes for Metronomy, Black Devil Disco Club and Hercules & Love Affair to a name but a few, he is making an indelible mark on the world of house and techno. He delivers an accompanying remix picking apart the sentiment of the original he rewires it into a slow-burning 4x4 astral voyage.

Prodigiously talented young German producer Etnik delivers a dark dub remix driven by a powerfully re-enforced rhythm section. Built on the unrelenting kick pulse, the remix brings out the track?s anologue warmth and twists it into an altogether deadlier and more streamlined shape cast for the dance floor.

?Scarlett Etienne rounds off the remixes carving out a warping anologue-heavy techno remix that shatters the original and rewires it as an acid tinged warehouse killer. Name-checked by the likes of Sasha (who named her ?Breakthrough DJ of 2008? in the Top 100 issue of DJMag), signed up to represent Pioneer Pro DJ, and dressed by fashion heavyweight Matthew Williamson, she?s equally at home in the dance press as she is in Vogue. A self-produced, synthesizer-obsessed, multi-instrumentalist, with DJ gigs spanning from underground techno institution Watergate in Berlin, to the official Formula One party at KudeTa in Singapore, diversity is at the heart of Scarlett's sound.

On the B-Side, ?Spark? acts as the perfect counterpoint. Driven by the same spirit as ?Sea Of LCD? it is gifted a charged energy by the intertwining layers of surging synth swells and glimmering melodic touches. The glittering sexually-charged synth-pop gem gets a rework by 21-year old London DJ, Lemmy Ashton who tightens it up to work on a peak time dancefloor. Influenced by his parents collection of Disco as well as Prince, Janet Jackson and recent releases on all your favourite record labels, Lemmy Ashton has been making waves throughout the London club scene. With his remixes and original tracks gaining radio play and being named as BBC's introducing artist of the week on multiple occasions, he is certainly part of the new breed of young producers and DJs coming through the ranks.

Fifteen Years Of Hospital Records - Various Artists

added: 7 Jan 2012 // release date: 7 Jan 2012 // label:
reviewer: Matt Shingler

Fifteen Years Of Hospital Records - Various Artists - Email this album review Printable version In the past years Hospital records have become a household name in Drum & Bass. Constantly bringing a more defined and futuristic approach to the genre. And to celebrate 15 years of the labels accomplishments a new compilation CD has been released.

For those that don?t know, Hospital records produced the likes of High Contrast, Danny Byrd and even the labels founder Tony Colman has been dishing out tracks under the name London Elecktricity.

The Album ?15 years of Hospital Records? features the cream of the crop, with some amazing VIP remixes. Especially High Contrast?s ?If we ever? being self-remixed into pure ear candy. Delivering his usual Liquid Funk style and featuring some powerful vocal samples.

One of the labels veterans- Danny Byrd?s quick paced, heavy rhythms never fail to disappoint. With his song ?B.R.I.S.T.O.L? which features a very Hyper MC Risky spitting lyrics. To find out what ?B.R.I.S.T.O.L? stands for you?ll just have to buy the album!

Newbies at the label - Netsky, Fred V and Grafix, and Camo and Crooked- contribute songs that are just as captivating as those by the labels veterans. With Netsky?s remix of Rusko?s ?Everyday? delivering some truly epic trance style beats.

And of course there?s the Boss Man ? London Elecktricity. With a superb remix of one of his earliest tracks ?Songs in the Key of Knife?. Through this song you can see where all the other artists have learned there techniques from.

This album certainly does show Hospital Records to be some kind of big, happy Drum & Bass family. And the families fifteen years of hard work have been brought together into an hour long mix by Cyantific. This smoothly goes through a decade of amazing music by all of the labels artists.

If Drum & Bass was a country, Hospital records would definitely be responsible for a national anthem!

Gretchen Peters - Hello Cruel World - Proper Records

added: 6 Jan 2012 // release date: 30 Jan 2012 // label: Proper Records
reviewer: David Spencer

Gretchen Peters - Hello Cruel World - Email this album review Printable version To say that it has been an extraordinary last year or so in the life of Gretchen Peters would be an understatement. The Grammy nominated singer from Nashville has seen floods and the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster affect her home or hometown, while in her personal life there as been the loss of a friend through suicide and the revelation from her child that he is transgender (something she describes as ?inspiring?).

There has been some light to the shade, with her marriage to long-time partner Barry Walsh. Inevitably therefore, this is quite a dark album (as Peters herself describes) with Dark Angel?s talk of ?no heaven?no hell? summing up a general mood of defiance. It seems that Peters feels that the last few years have tested her, and for a reason she has survived and for that reason life is for living to the full.

While the mood might be different, musically Hello Cruel World is as expected. Accomplished country tinged acoustic guitar and piano dominate, with the odd delightfully mournful trumpet (Camille). The title track, now listed on Radio 2, is probably as ?catchy? as it gets and the message within underlines the album?s mood; ?Me I?m gonna stick around, in for a penny in for a pound, ?cause I hate to miss the show.?

Hello Cruel World?s reference to suicide is just one place where Peters? recent experiences can be found along with Natural Disaster?s juxtaposition of a broken heart with hurricanes and earthquakes, while the unsettling Idlewild (complete with lush strings) is a story taken from her childhood. Peters? voice is superbly backed by the outstanding Kim Richey on several tracks and the musicianship is of course top notch.

Ultimately, considering the background to this release, the album is not as dark as we are warned. The Dark Angel duet with Rodney Crowell is typical; despite references to a ?beautiful disaster?, in the end there is a uplifting spirit that permeates. And rather than feeling cold and despairing, come the last track (Little World) you are instead feeling warm and hopeful.
